Mr. Ackerman, a graduate of Rutgers University and the PMD program at Harvard, with an honorary doctorate from Rutgers University, has served Corning since 1962 in a variety of engineering, sales and management positions. In 1972 he was elected the president of a Corning subsidiary, Corhart Refractories Co., in 1975 the general manager and vice president of the Ceramic Products Division and in 1980 a senior vice president. In 1981 Mr. Ackerman became the director of the Manufacturing and Engineering Division, in 1983 the president of MetPath Inc., and in 1985 the group president of Specialty Materials and a director. In 1990 he was elected the president and chief operating officer of Corning. He was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer in April 1996.

Mr. Ackerman is a director of The Pittston Company, the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, and the Dow Corning Corporation. He is a trustee of the Corning Incorporated Foundation and the Corning Museum of Glass. He is president of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and chairman of The Business Council of New York State. He is a member of the Business Roundtable, The Business Council, and the Rutgers University Foundation Board of Overseers. He is past president of the Corning YMCA, and the Northeastern Board of the National YMCA, and has been active in many other civic and educational organizations.
