Ramani Ayer

RAMANI AYER became the ninth chairman of The Hartford and its president and chief executive officer on Feb. 1, 1997, succeeding Donald R. Frahm who retired at age 65.

He has been president and chief operating officer of Hartford Fire Insurance Company since 1991. Under Ayer's direction, The Hartford's worldwide property-casualty operations have grown substantially. The company's North American operations are the eighth largest in the United States with revenues of more than $6.3 billion and its international operations generates revenues of $1.6 billion.

Ayer is past chairman of the Insurance Services Organization and chairman of the American Insurance Association's Task Force on Catastrophe Issues. He also was the vice chairman of AIA's Special Board Committee on Workers' Compensation.

Ayer joined The Hartford in 1973. He was elected assistant secretary and staff assistant to the chairman and chief executive of The Hartford in 1979. In 1983 he was named vice president of HartRe, The Hartford's reinsurance subsidiary; and became president of Hartford Specialty Company in 1986. He was elected senior vice president of The Hartford in 1989 and executive vice president in 1990. He earned master's and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from Drexel University, and a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, India.
