EDS

Les Alberthal’s story and that of EDS share many of the same pages.

Alberthal, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer, joined EDS just after college in 1968 -- only six years after the company was founded. He built his career while helping build the business and, upon taking the helm of EDS in 1986, steered the company’s tremendous grrowth and leadership in the information services business.

Alberthal makes it clear that he is a leader among equals. His story, like the company’s, is about team effort. "People built EDS. Not just me. Yes, I’ve grown up with this company, but I worked with many others to build it and make it successful. Those people have kept me here. Through them, I have the joy of being associated with the best of the best," he says.

Among Alberthal’s significant accomplishments att EDS over the years is his leadership of the company into the global marketplace. He has supported and promoted major trade issues for EDS and its industry throughout the world -- his speaking engagements are as likely to be in São Paulo or Yokohama as they are in Dallas or Washington, D.C. EDS’ business has followed                                   Alberthal’s mindset. Under his guidance, EDS has become not just a company with offices in many different countries, but also a global team that understands and serves specific needs of customers throughout the world.
One of the things that makes the team so good, says Alberthal, is its ability to adapt to rapidly evolving client needs and changes in the information services business. Over the years,  for example, EDS has maintained strong and                                steady growth amidst globalization of markets, revolutions in software and hardware, convergence of technologies, and a swiftly growing, amazingly diverse employee population.

Alberthal has insisted on embracing the new, rather than resting on corporate laurels. "The easiest role for me, and for everyone at EDS, would be to turn our current success into a formula, sit back and keep doing it. But that’s a                                 guaranteed slow death for a company. We’ve never given up and taken the easy path, and I hope we never will."

Alberthal says there are many things about both EDS and his job, however, that have remained constant: the need for innovation, a service                             mentality, and dedication to customers. He says his commitment to EDS will stay just as steady. "When all is said and done, there’s no personal                                  gain or glory. It’s all about what you do for your company."

A Helper of Education
"Nothing is more important than education. It’s going to be the key to all future individual and corporate success," Les Alberthal says of his commitment to learning.

He stays involved with charities and educational institutions around the world, helping them ensure that tomorrow’s work force has the knowledge and experience to meet tomorrow’s challenges.

"We all must give something back to our communities," he says. "This isn’t a particularly special idea; it’s a fundamental responsibility.  EDS is involved in many forms of community service, but the aspect we keep returning to is                                education."

Alberthal participates in a host of related activities. Among them: He pearheaded EDS’ involvement in the JASON Foundation for Education; he is a trustee of Southern Methodist University; and he is proud of EDS’ annual
Global Volunteer Day.
