ECKHARD PFEIFFER
Compaq Computer Corporation

Eckhard Pfeiffer is President and Chief Executive Officer of Compaq Computer Corporation, the world's largest supplier of desktop and portable PCS as well as powerful servers that provide midrange functionality for enterprise-class applications.

Since assuming overall responsibility in 1991 for directing Compaq's corporate strategies and operations worldwide, Pfeiffer has led the company through a highly successful turnaround and revitalization that Fortune magazine called "a classic case of corporate comeback." In the space of four years, he has transformed Compaq from the No.  5 to the No.  1 rank in worldwide PC industry marketshare, and from a PC company to a Fortune 100 global computer company focused on the enterprise and the home.  Over the same period, Pfeiffer has led Compaq from annual sales of $3 billion to more than $14 billion, based on Compaq's third quarter 1995 annualized run rate.

In acknowledgment, Forbes magazine, in its January 1, 1996 issue, named Pfeiffer to its "Short List of 1995's Best Performers," a list of 12 chief executive officers who lead major U.S.  companies that have turned in exceptional records over the past five years.  Additionally, CNBC named Pfeiffer "CEO of the Year" for 1994.  Computer Reseller News, which each year ranks the computer industry's top 25 executives, gave him No.
1 billing in 1994. Pfeiffer also received the InfoWorld 1994 Industry Achievement Award. Recently, Fortune wrote that "CEO Pfeiffer is now taking on new risks that are bound to shake up the global computer business."

Before becoming CEO, Pfeiffer served as Compaq's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, responsible for all day-to-day operational functions such as worldwide sales, marketing, and manufacturing. Prior to that, he was President, Compaq Europe and International. After joining Compaq in 1983 as Vice President, Europe, he established Compaq's presence and wholly-owned subsidiaries throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America.

Under his leadership, Compaq became the No.  2 PC supplier in Europe, and in 1990, Compaq's international operations accounted for 54 percent of the company's overall revenue.
Before joining Compaq, Pfeiffer spent 20 years with Texas Instruments, ultimately serving as Vice President of Corporation Marketing.
